1 Nephi 4:6

"And I was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do" (1 Nephi 4:6)

I'd like to start by sharing my favourite scripture.
This verse happens just when Nephi and his brothers are commanded to go back to Jerusalem to take the records that Laban has. Nephi's brothers are hiding behind a rock and Nephi goes to Laban's to take the records back, not fearing. He trusts God for he commanded him to do so.
As I read that passage, I realized how important the role of the Holy Spirit is in our life, as it is what guides us and teaches us, the link, the messenger that Heavenly father communicates with us with so that we can know what to do and how to act even though we don't what is going to happen next. It is an exercise of faith as we have to trust our Lord.
It makes me think of 1 Nephi 4:18 when Nephi decides to follow the Spirit after a moment of confusion when he did not know what to do when facing a difficulty.
I try my best to apply that scripture in my life. Sometimes I just have this feeling to do something and I'm like "oh where does this feeling come from? is it the holy ghost? Oh no, I'm sure this is just my feelings, no need to act upon that". Elder Bednar, one of our living apostles taught us that when we start wondering if it is the Holy Ghost or not, it is usually the right decision to make: follow that intuition you just had! That's what I did a few days ago and I can already see the blessings in my life today. It is hard to trust God and to do what he wants us to do, because as humans we think a lot and don't see where it is going to lead us but God knows, just trust him.
While reading this scripture again, a few days ago, I learned something else: in order to trust the Lord we have to trust ourselves. If you don't trust yourself by following what you think is true inside of you, how are you going to act according to the whisper of the Holy Spirit? We have to be confident and recognize the whispers of the Holy Ghost so that the will of our Heavenly Father can be done through us. It is an exercise of Faith as we don't see who we are trusting in nor do we see or know what is going to happen. But elder Bednar demonstrates with an example: What if suddenly the room you are in right now becomes all dark? Imagine you can't see anything. Then a light appears above your head and surrounds you, just a little circle. The light tells you to do one step forward in the darkness. But it is so dark you can't see anything! Imagine there is a hole, or something that will hurt you! So it is hard to trust but you move forward. And then you see that it is safe and that there is nothing but a solid ground. Then you have to take one more step. Will it be as hard as the first time? Little by little you will feel more peaceful and not as afraid as the first time. It will bless you as you will finally be able to go to the end of the room with no problem, for the light guided you the whole time even though you could not see anything. It is just like that with God. Faith is an action word. I know that when listening to the voice of the Holy Ghost and obeying to him, we are blessed in several ways, we have more confidence little by little, and our faith increases which help us face our difficulties.
